What email protocol does MIP use?

As of v16.1 (Spring 2016) MIP uses two different mail protocols in different parts of the product. They are SMTP and MAPI.
 
SMTP – This is set up in Organization>Organization Information>SMTP tab.
SMTP is used for:
-Emailing of Payroll Vouchers.
-Emailing of AR Invoices/Statements.
-Emailing out of Scheduler/Report Binder.
-HR Notifications.
-Alerts.
 
MAPI is a built in mail interface. MIP requires a 32 bit LOCAL MAPI client. 64 bit versions or web based versions will not work.
MAPI is used for
-Emailing reports as PDF files.
-Emailing EFT for AP notifications.
-Emailing E-req Notifications (see note).
 
When emailing items that have attachments you must have the MIP Internal driver also installed on that workstation regardless of mail protocol.
 
NOTE: If you have full sql server it is possible to use SQL mail for Ereq notification. Customer support does not support, configure or troubleshoot the use of sql mail. If there are difficulties MAPI is recommended.
